Welcome to our island home of Jamaica land of wood and water, a lover’s paradise with water scope of fluidic rivers, waterfalls and beautiful beaches! Jamaica was first inhabited by the Tainos, an Arawak speaking people who called the island Xaymaca meaning, “land of wood and water”. In 1494 on his arrival Christopher Columbus was greeted by the Tainos. His arrival depicts the beginning of nearly 500 years of European occupation and governance. Jamaica remained under Spanish rulership until 1605, when the British conquered the Spanish. In 1962 Jamaica got its independence from Britain. “Out of many one people” is this islands motto. Our ancestors from Africa, Europe and Asia have helped shape Jamaica, and make it the multifaceted mosaic of international customs and traditions it is today.
